Delhi: The Major Archbishop Cardinal Mar George Alencherry inaugurated the International Women’s Day Celebrations organised by the Deepti Foundations in Delhi. The event took place at the Mother Teresa Auditorium, Tahirpur, Delhi, on 14 March 2023. Over 600 women and children participated in the celebrations. In his inaugural address, the Major Archbishop highlighted the role of women as the frontiers of development in modern society. His Beatitude cited the examples of the Honourable President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and several women who made substantial contributions as scientists, professionals, CEOs, and office bearers at important offices. He encouraged women to draw inspiration from them and make progress in Society. The Major Archbishop also mentioned the need for gender equality for a healthy Society today.
Deepti Foundations at Delhi is an initiative of MST fathers from the Syro-Malabar Church that runs several empowerment and charitable programmes for women and children in the peripheries of Delhi. The foundation has trained over two thousand women in skill development and income generation programmes through Self Help Groups. The foundation facilitated the literacy of hundreds of rag-picking children from the Delhi dump yard in the past eight years. Rev Fr. Santhosh Gervasis MST, Fr. Joseph Karodan MST, Fr. Abin Kochupurackal MST , Sr.Adv.Sneha Gill, a former member of the Minority Commission and an advocate at the Supreme Court, was also present at the celebrations.
